RENO, NV - In order to better serve the students and families of the Washoe County School District, the Washoe County Education Foundation and the Education Collaborative of Washoe County will merge to form the Education Alliance of Washoe County.  The new organization will operate as a single 501 (c) 3, under the guidance of Superintendent Paul Dugan, streamlining programming, increasing efficiencies, and developing opportunities for business and community impact on the local education system.

The Education Alliance will preserve the programs and initiatives of the Education Collaborative and the Education Foundation.  The Foundation’s Focus on Literacy initiative and the Collaborative’s two-decade old Partner’s in Education program and K-16 partnership with the University of Nevada Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College are but three examples of efforts that will continue to help students, teachers and schools in Washoe County.

“While the two non-profit organizations were working cooperatively with business and community leaders, together the alliance will bring stronger support from state leaders and business and community partners, ultimately enhancing the educational system for student achievement, “said Paul Dugan, Superintendent for Washoe County School District.

Co-chaired by well known businessmen Fred Boyd, current Education Foundation vice-chairman, and Steve Laden, the current president of the Education Collaborative, the Education Alliance will foster educational excellence through a variety of educational programming while implementing and sustaining a comprehensive development plan to raise funds through annual giving, endowment, major gifts, special projects and public grants.

Stand Up for Students, the formal community celebration of the merger, will take place on October 14 with a special presentation by the Capitol Steps, a well-known comedy group from Washington D.C.  Festivities begin at 5:30 pm with the performance starting at 7:30 pm at the Grand Ball Room in downtown Reno.  For more information about Stand Up for Students, please contact Lauren Ohlin at 348-0254.
