EDUCATION ALLIANCE CHAMPIONS PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY EVENT WITH LOCAL BUSINESS LEADERS

Educating local business leaders about public education

(November 2010 - RENO, Nev.) - The Education Alliance of Washoe County, in partnership with the Washoe County School District (WCSD), is planning to educate local business and community leaders with a job shadowing event at local high, middle and elementary schools. The business leaders will job shadow the school principals on Tuesday, November 30, 2010.

Twenty-eight businesses and their leaders will participate: Jeff Stout, Renown Regional; Nicholas Tejeda, Saint Mary's; Dr. Todd Lorenc, Saint Mary's; Jim Pfrommer, Pfrommer & McCune, Ltd; Jennifer Burton, Positively Northern Nevada; Brent Boynton, Community; Ken Achurra, Umpqua Bank; Randy Brown, AT&T; Dr. Kyle Dalpe, TMCC; Dr. Angie Taylor, Greater Light Christian Center; David Bobzien, Nevada Legislature; John Mayer, WCSD Board of Trustees, Elect; Manny Martinez, Consultant; Siobhan McAndrew, Reno Gazette Journal; Dennis McGovern, Legends at Sparks Marina; David Dehls, Charter Communications; Kellie George, United Federal Credit Union; Kitty Jung, Washoe County Commissioner; Mike Wurm, Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows; Chris Morgan, Sierra Property Management; Kurt Mische, KNPB; Rick Thomas, ProTechnical; John Murphy, Reno News and Review; Leslie Henderson, Intero Real Estate; Miguel Mena, Radio Exitos; Edward Vento, Nevada Hispanic Services; Jesus Gutierrez, Fresh Mex Restaurant; and Tim Ruffin, Colliers International Reno are participating in this event. They have been paired up with the principals from Damonte Ranch HS, Reed HS, Huffaker ES, Hug HS, Swope MS, Mathews ES, Elmcrest ES, Pine MS, Sparks HS, Mount Rose ES, Winnemucca ES, Risley ES, Hunter Lake ES, Desert Heights ES, Van Gorder ES, Vaughn MS, Spanish Springs HS, Lois Allen ES, Cold Springs MS, TMCC HS, Smithridge ES, Sparks MS, Dilworth MS, Diedrichsen ES, Palmer ES, Donner Springs ES, Sierra Vista ES, and Booth ES.

"We are thrilled to provide this experience for business leaders to participate in the day-to-day activities at our schools," stated Denise Hedrick, Executive Director at the

Education Alliance of Washoe County. "The WCSD principals will be able to share information about their school, the district and their professions with these business leaders. The principals do so much to keep the children in Washoe County safe and well educated."

Business leaders and principals will start the day off at the school. The business leaders will shadow the principal in all their duties that day. These may include staff meetings; classroom observation and evaluation; bus duty; interactions with students, teachers, and parents; administrative tasks; and lunch-room duty. At 2:30 p.m., all of the business leaders and principals will meet at the Microsoft Licensing offices for refreshments and a debriefing session lead by Guy Farmer, Unconventional Training. Microsoft has generously agreed to host this session. Feedback will be gathered and evaluated for future participants and events.

The Education Alliance hosted a Principal for the Day event on May 13, 2010 with fifteen business leaders and school participating. There are plans to make this an on-going event.
