Improving Partnerships Is Focus Of Parent Involvement Summit
Reno, Nev., (March 11, 2010) - -More than six hundred parents, educators, community members and state legislators will gather on Friday, March 12th at UNR's Joe Crowley Student Union to discuss and learn about the importance of families and parent involvement in education. This year's Summit has tripled in the number of attendees as compared with the last Summit held in Las Vegas in 2008.
"The economy has highlighted the increasing importance of parent involvement in education. As resources for schools become scarce, the need to reach out to families becomes more important each day. Families are critical to a child's success and all of our schools can improve and build on their partnerships with families," stated Dr. Heath Morrison, Superintendent of Washoe County School District. Morrison will also deliver welcoming remarks.
Sixteen of Nevada's 17 school districts will be represented to hear three national speakers and attend 27 different sessions featuring programs and ideas on how to build relationships and strong partnerships with all families in the education of their children. Some of the sessions featured include: Positive Home Visits, Linking Families to School through Afterschool Programs, Student-led Parent Teacher Conferences in middle and high school and Reaching the Masses through Social Media.
"Parents and educators need to work together to support our children. Not all educators have the information they need to work with families and not all families have the information they need to support their children. The Summit is about helping both sides of this critical partnership to do that better," stated Barbara Clark, Chair and Co-Founder of the Summit.
Nevada's Third Parent Involvement Summit, Connecting the Dots, is a collaborative effort of the Nevada State Parent Information & Resource Center (PIRC) at the Education Alliance, Washoe County School District, Clark County School District, the Nevada Department of Education and the Nevada Parent Teacher Association.
The Summit is sponsored by: the Nevada State PIRC at the Education Alliance, the WCSD Parent Involvement Council, Washoe County School District, Clark County School District, the Nevada Mining Association, Nevada Parent Teacher Association, WCSD Department of Child & Family Services, the Nevada Association of School Boards, College Savings Fund of Nevada, the University of Nevada, Reno and Silver State Schools Credit Union.
